Database Install/Upgrade/Opatch (MOSC)

Stacking Installs before upgrading..

 My client has a stack of DBs on a Linux box that are all running 10.1.0.3.  they want to upgrade to 10.2.0.4 and have the latest CPU's applied.
Can I:  Install 10.2.0.1, Install 10.2.0.4 over it and then Install the CPU...all to the same home ...and then upgrade the DB's with the composite home ?

I seems like a lot more work to install/upgrade for each of the 3 steps above?
