RMAN - Noob seeking advice from experienced users

I've been an Oracle DBA (aspiring) for approx 4 years now and have spent time familizing myself with RMAN.  I've read parts of the Oracle Press 10g B&R handbook, and many other related documents (best practices, etc...).  I've even taken the training.  But for some reason I still don't seem to have a good grasp on it.  What reading I've done hasn't brought it together for me.  Everything kind of seems the same.  You're given a bunch of information and expected to know what to do with it.  And while I realize this is how Oracle is, it's not working
