Is Grid required when upgrading an 11.1.0.6.0 single server ASM instance and associated 10.2.0.4 dat

 I have an 11.1.0.6.0 single server ASM instance and associated single 10.2.0.4 database configuration that I want to upgrade to 11GR2.  I have reviewed "Oracle Database Upgrade Guide E10819-02", "Oracle Database Storage Admin Guide E1-500-02",   and "Oracle Grid Infrastructure Installation Guide E10812-02".

I am totally confused.

The Grid install guide talks about clusters and I do not have a cluster configuration unless Oracle is now calling a single server a cluster.

Can I just upgrade my ASM instance to 11GR2 and then upgrade my 10GR2 database to 11GR2 or do I really have to install Grid ?
