MODIFYING CARRIER INFO AND STATUS WHEN OPEN ORDERS EXIST

Several updates need to be made to approximately 20 of our freight carriers.  Some are Org assignment changes, some are inactivations, others are description modifications.  What is best practice regarding managing open sales orders populated with these carriers?  Will existing orders still ship or will the carrier fail to validate?
