Change Tax Handling via Autoinvoice Rules?

Is it possible to change the tax handling status of a sales order line with autoinvoice rules?

Here is the scenario.

1. Order line has a tax handling status of Exempt for a specific item.

2. When autoinvoice runs, I would like the tax handling status to change from Exempt to Standard for this item in a particular state.

3. The transaction (invoice) will have this specific item set to Standard for tax.

Is the above possible with autoinvoice? Any ideas?
