dbverify datafile vs. validate b/u

 I have been tasked to run dbverify on 2.5Tb of datafiles. this would require me to either take the db down or take the tablespaces offline one at a time.

my question is,  I do daily b/u's. Can I 'validate backupset #' instead of doing a dbverify on the current online datafiles and get the same results?

i am running oracle 10.2.0.3, 2 node rac on linux 64-bit RHEL 5.1
