What can we do with issued materials after the WO has been cancelled?

My question is exactly from the Enterprise Assets Management module field.
When we have a some WO in process with already issued materials and try to change the WO status from released to cancelled, the system let us do it, in spite of the fact that some amount of material have been already issued.
After WO is cancelled we can't do anything with issued material and also with the WO, except returning status value to "released" mode again. Where is the sense?
Why the system can let us change status value from released to cancelled when some amount of material have been issued and doesn't let us return issued material to inventory?
