Database Backup of Oracle System's file

 I have a query regarding Backup.. Can i take direct backup of  Oradata of particular instance means (All the control files,.dbf files and redologfiles)?
is it possible when instance is running? or We have to take a backup after instance shutdown? what would be the preferable method?

and further

if my that instance got crashed ? so at that time is it possible that to copy above mentioned files into particular Orahome\*\oradata\ folder ?
And can i up my database upto that point of time when i had taken backup of those files?

please do the needful..
