Oracle release Management - Is Customer item Mandatory to use RLM

 is it Mandatory to define and use customer item to use Release Management. We are exploring RLM to be used for automotive customers, however we do not define Customer item for each internal item number.
I have noticed that to create schedule, Customer part number is mandatory field. is there a way to bypass that ?
