PO line status conundrum

A user has presented me with a situation that I can't answer so I'm looking for help. A PO line has the "Cancelled" box checked in Purchase Order Summary, but the line closure status reads as "Open". I thought the act of cancelling a line makes it closed as well.

This PO was created quite a long time ago (13 years) so was created in version 10.6 or 10.7. Are there any "seasoned veterans" out there that remember the rules back then - was it possible to cancel a line and have it remain open?
