Old records in MTL_DEMAND

Our MTL_DEMAND table is full of records that go back to our implementation of Oracle about 6 years ago. 

Does anyone know why  these records are still there?  The orders certainly are no longer demand and having these records is causing problems with deleting the BOMs of some old obsolete items. 

Is there any setting I acn change or job I can run that will clear out the non-demand records?  Would all these old records cause performance problems with MPS/MRP?
