RMAN compatibility issue ( RMAN-06429)

  We have installed Oracle 10g client on OMS server. (on SAN). Our production database version is 9.2.0.8. When connect "RMAN" , it shows the 10.2.0.4.0 version. I am getting following error message:

RMAN-06429: database is not compatible with this version ...

Can't we use the RMAN higher version to take lower version database backup?
