Oracle is currently working on an SR on this topic, while we are diagnosing the problem we are opening up this question to our user community so they can add perspective to the solution based on their real world experience

One of our linux servers has a dev, test and prod environments. There are different oracle homes for each environment but we have two inventories somehow. Can these be merged? Currently I have to edit /etc/oraInst.loc to change between them for patching.
