Oracle 11gR2, RHEL 4- Update 7 - hanging on pre-reqs intall

I have a box with a single dual core process, 8G ram, running Linux (RHEL4-update 7).  I have checked and rechecked all the pre-requisites for the install of Oracle 11gR2.  All hardware and software settings are correct per the Oracle installation documentation.

The install hangs during Pre-Req checks at 53%:  Checking Hard Limit:  maximum open file descriptors.    All my system kernel parameters match the Oracle documentation.    The /etc/sec urity/limits.conf file for user oracle shows hard nofile 65536.  Have I missed something?

I have tried running:  ./runInstaller -ignoreSysPrereqs and it hangs at the same place.

Thanks.
