Reusing pick slip numbers

We use the pick slip number in our interface to our EDI package where it is used as a shipment ID.  The problem is that this field in our EDI package is only six (6) position long, and we are now reaching the point where we will need to reset the pick slip number because we are in the 900,000's. The software will not allow us to re-use pick slip numbers.

One option is to purge the older pick slip numbers from the Sales Order file, but that is not out first choice. What other possibilities might there be to accomplish this?
