Serial Number update allowed by users in r12

 Working on implementing 12.1.2 and I find that Oracle now allows users to edit the Serial Number field for existing item instances (barring a few stipulations). This is not exactly a desireable feature. I would expect to be controlled by a profile setting. I don't find a profile setting for this.

I haven't tried forms personalization yet, suspect that I could address this concern there, but it would be ideal if there is a simple set up to address this.

Q:

1. Is there a setting to control this?

2. Has anyone tried addressing this via forms personalization? If so, please explain you set up and experience with this.
