Database Links from 11gR2 to 8.1.74

We are in the throws of upgrading from 9i to 11gR2.

During a recent test we found that using a database link from 11gR2 to the 8.1.7.4 database caused a ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel at the source 11g database and a core dump at the 8.1.7.4 database.

In tests we can link to 9i, 10g and other 11g database. We can also link from the 8.1.7.4 database to the 11gR2 database

I can also link from a 11gR1 database to the 8.1.74 database.

Anyone out there know of any solutions that will allow me to keep the database links in place?

I realise that there is NO SUPPORT for this, and upgrading the 8i database is not really an option.
