Backup Still Running.....

 My production db server is experiencing a problem with the backup job not ending.  The backup log never gets written because its waiting for the output.  It appears as if the job completed based on the backup file sizes and the fact the is brought back online however the job remains in a running state  ( I perform cold backups nightly).  This also prevents my reoccurring backup job from kicking off the follwing night.  Any ideas?

The alert log does not indicate to me why the job is hung.
