Can you turn off the check digit for Address Book numbers?

Question:

If you would like to turn off the check digit that is assigned to the Address Book Next Number (NN) index 1, so that gaps in the numbering created by the check digit can be used, are there any negative implications of doing so?

There might be issues caused by the transposing of numbers when entering vouchers for suppliers, but this may not be a concern.
