How could a script decide on starting a database in standby or open mode?

Hallo, I have DG environments in Oracle 10g and Oracle 11g. When the 10g-database is down, my startscript could get some information from spfile to start the database into the correct standby or open mode. With Oracle 11g I found no differences in the both spfiles. Are there some other things to get information about the primary or standby state of the database I have to start when it's down? Thanks - best regards - Volkhard
