Calling Import/Export Project web services from Visual Studio 2008/.Net 3.5

I'm attempting to work with the P6 web services from an ASP.Net web site with .Net version 3.5 in Visual Studio 2008. With VS2008, Microsoft dropped support for MTOM calls which is required for the Primavera ImportProject and ExportProject web services. I have found some work arounds, but they require having VS2005, so they aren't very sustainable in the long term.

Is there any way to import/export projects with the web services without MTOM? We are currently using 6.2, but we will be upgrading to either R7 or R8 when possible, so if this is something that has changed in those versions, that would also be useful to know.
