Use of constraints

 Is it advisable  to use "as late as possible" constaints for administrative activties like submitting drawings and getting approvals , in a project in order to push their dates closer to their related activties. I do not want to bring these activties on the critical path. However I find using this constraint, creates problem during status updates. Is their any other way by which I can push the dates for certain activties other than increasing their durations.
