rman restore from disk

I am upgrading from 9.2.0.8 to 11.1.0.7 via Rman. I have taken a cold level 0 rman backup of the source and copied it over to the new server. Once I have sorted out the various upgrade requirements I am doing a restore database with rman, direct into 11.1.0.7. My problem is that rman seems to scan every single backup piece before commencing the restore. This was not an issue with some small databases, but as I start to restore larger (300GB+) this is impacting my upgrade schedule. This behaviour seems the opposite of restoring from tape, where rman seems to start restoring
