How to generate Unique Identifiers

1 - OpportunityID displays in a two segment format (AAPA-4F6HK1)

Can anyone explain the meaning of these to segments? Does Segment1 indicate POD name or instance name?

We would like remove segment1 and use only segment2 as a unique identifier. Will this still be unique?

2 - The function RowIdToRowNum(FieldValue('<OpportunityId>')) returns a value like (480430-267366301).

Will the returned value always be unique?

Can anyon explain the meaning of these two segments?

Again, we would like remove segment1 and use just segment2 as a unique identifier. Will this still be unique? 3 - Any recommendations on how to create a simple five or six digit sequence to be used as a unique identifier?
