Search or filter by Create Date without the time stamp?

When doing a quick search filtered by Create Date, selecting any specific date includes a default time stamp of 12:00 PM.  When using that filter for today's date, I get no results.  If I go to the Advanced area of the search and manually create a filter for Create Date, TODAY, I get a bunch of results.  How can I turn off the time stamp in the search field, and still preserve display of the time stamp in the results?
