Planning to upgrade from 4.6-85 to 5.1 and need a back out plan just in case

Hello;
We're looking for gotchas running 5.1 that would force us back to 4.6
Can you describe what the sideband db is- what it holds, how does it
work? Is it useful to enable? Is it enabled by default?
