WMS custom label fields

I have noticed when I add a custom label field to a label, the label will not generate if the data returned is null. I have a label I added the customer ship to address. If address line 2 is blank (null), for example, a warning is returned in label history and the label XML file is not generated. I assume the same would happen if I wanted to print a serial number on a label, but a given item did not have a serial number.
This is very limiting, what is the proper way around this?
