Supplier Merge vs. Inactivating Suppliers/

 We have several duplicate suppliers that we would like to merge.  What are the pros and cons of running the supplier merge program vs. just inactiving suppliers and sites that you no longer want to be visible to the requestors?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
