What is Gather Schema Statistics?

Hi,
May I ask what does Gather Schema Statistics do or can someone direct me to a metalink note with clear discussion of Gather Schema Statistics.. We tried doing it in the test instance but after the request was completed, the 'Output' button is grayed out. We need some clarifications before we try it into the production instance.
