Trading Partner - Temporarily disable

 Is there a way to 'disable' a Trading Partner setup temporarily so that Transmission Method on PO does not default to XML where it cannot be changed to Email? 

I was told that setting 'Disable Production Routing' to 'Yes' in OSN is not the answer - rather, that you need to delete the entire TP setup?  I am having issues with a supplier and need to email PO's to them until the issue is fixed - and then want to re-enable the XML transmission.
