RMAN throughput

Been using RMAN to create compressed backups, to disk,  for years, now.  Then do "recovery area backups" to tape later.  Datawarehouse has been growing outrageously and is now 1.3 TB.  It could top 4 TB  by next summer.  Last night's backup took 10.5 hours.  Compressed backups are about 22% of uncompressed size.  This is clearly no longer a workable approach!

Removing compression seems to cut run times by about 50% (at the cost of more disk!).  But even 5 hours/backup is a problem, given how fast this beast is growing!

We're running P580 IBM hardware (AIX 6.1) and Hitachi SAN.  Databases are on mirrored disk, as are the flash recovery area drives.  I recognize that network connectivity is critical to this question.  The servers are at 1 GB full duplex with two, teamed, nic cards.

Howdy, Stranger!
