11gr2 question

 HI: I'm studying 11gr2 for an eventual upgrade to our environment.  I want to use Oracle grid with the installation of 11gr2.  I want to verify that the documentation states that you HAVE to use ASM if you install Oracle grid with 11gr2.  Is this true?  Even if we have a separate LVM subsystem, do we now have to change existing architecture in order to be able to use Grid with 11gr2?  Please advise.
