Can we interface pre-numbered projects when automatic numbering is enabled?

 We want to use automatic project numbering as standard, but also have an external system that generates it's own project numbers.

Is it possible to have a "mix and match" approach with all projects created using the standard forms being autoamtically numbered, but the projects created in the external system being interfaced as pre-numbered?

The external system generates 7-digit numbers, so I would set the automatic number generation to be 8-digit.

Any suggestions welcome
