Upgrade APS 9.3.0 to 9.3.1 without upgrading other services

My company is on version 9.3.0.1 of Hyperion Essbase/Planning/BI+. We upgraded Smart View to version 9.3.1.7 to avoid a problem with spreadsheets changing color. Unfortunately, we can no longer connect Smart View to Essbase as a query tool because our version of APS is too old. Oracle support recommends that we move up to APS version 9.3.1.6. They say that we can just upgrade APS without upgrading any of the other components. I have heard that it is a bad idea to upgrade one service to a new 9.3.x version without upgrading all of them. Has anyone had experience upgrading APS 9.3.0 to 9.3.1 without upgrading any other
