Task Assignments

So far the only way I have found to remove the task level assignments on a team member home page is to close the project or progess the lowest task to Completed.  Does anyone know if it is possible to remove the assignment if the project is changed to a Pending Close status?   Or does anyone know another way to remove task assignments on the team member home page?
