Archivelog backups to disk VERY slow

 Mainly I'm looking for possibilities here as I've run out of ideas.

We recently converted backups on an oracle 10.2.0.2 instance running on AIX 5.3 to backup direct to nfs mounted disk.  The full (and incremental) backups run very quickly, very good throughput.  However the archivelog backups are incredibly slow.  45 MB log files take 8-9 minutes each to copy over.   I can copy the same log files manually (from a prompt or WinSCP) and each file copies in 4-5 seconds.   I have a similar configuration on another system that runs fine.... just this one is a problem and only on the archivelog backup.     There's no memory issues, not seeing paging issues, and the system is not
