End Date Gl Account Combinations

We have some GL account combinations that are going away as of Oct 1.  Is there a way to end date the accounts for just new entries (FY2011) and allow anything with a GL date of 30-Sept-2010 to process?   Or can we shut off encumbrance for the old accounts.
