Need to apply patch p 5496862, what are the essential precaution?

 Hi Experts,
In order to get rid of following error-

ORA-01110: data file 5: '/u02/oradb/testdb/ifsapp_data.dbf'
ORA-27091: skgfqio: unable to queue I/O
ORA-27072: skgfdisp: I/O error IBM AIX RISC System/6000 Error: 5: I/O error

My application vendor suggested me to apply patch  p 5496862. But I am new to applying oracle patch. Anyone there to suggest me how to do? any suggested link?

I am using :

Oracle9i Release 9.2.0.8.0 - 64bit Production under AIX UNIX 5.3
