One Item Master for Multiple Operating Units?

 Hello,
I am getting conflicting reports/articles that don't seem to directly answer:

In R12, Is it possible for one Item Master organization to be shared by two Operating Units?

I am currently logged into a Responsibility for the second OU... and when it comes time to set up a new Org (call it AAA), there is nothing in the Org Parameters Item Master LOV.. (all that's there is AAA).

Please advise. Thanks.
