ORA-00236: snapshot operation disallowed: mounted control file is a backup

backup current controlfile;


While I was attempting to take a backup using RMAN it started to give errors stating :

ORA-00236: snapshot operation disallowed: mounted control file is a backup


Could anyone guide whats going wrong.


Note that this is a standby database where I perform a backup of controlfile

Also if I query controlfile type it shows : 

STANDBY
