Purge old projects in R12.1.2

Can someone tell me where I can find information on how to purge old records.  The refreshes for summary and transactions take forever.  We have much data that can be removed as it is no longer required.  How do I do that?  The costing manual does not even contain the word purge.  Any help will be appreciated.
