Questions on speed matching

What capability do the tape drives have for speed matching. From what I have read, it looks like they have 2 speeds, full and about 50%. Can we get actual details on speed matching sensitivity.  I would like to know how slow can it go before it goes to 50% speed, and how slow before it starts to shoe shine.
Is there is a way to query the drives to see if they are shoe shining?
