Organization Assignment Truncating Item Numbers

We're on Oracle Applications 11.5.8.  We've had a situation where a user enter an item number in the standard Master Items screen and then used Tools --> Organization --> Assignment to assign to inventory organizations.  The item number has a dot in it, as in abcd.8a.  For most -- though not all -- organization records, it created the new item as just abcd and truncated the part after the dot.  The item was assigned to about 15 organizations, and for some reason this happened in 13 of them, and it created the full item number for 2 of them.  Judging
