understanding the output of top command?

Hi,

We are running a process, which consumes more resources on system. We are using top command and enterprise manager provided by oracle to monitor the system and observed the below:

 The top command is as "165 140 100" under "load average" section. My understanding was it should show max of 100, becuase it is an average. But it is showing more than hundered.  

Please explain this in detail.

If this is not the correct group to answer, please suggest me the correct group.
