Receipt Application Date - Can this be before invoice due date?

We send invoices to customers in advance that have due date in future. Customer sometimes pays against these invoices before the due date. When we enter the receipt in oracle and match it to the invoice, system defaults due date in the 'Apply Date' field. System does not allow to change this date to current date. This is causing an issue as we have another system integrated to AR which gets the settlement date from apply date. As the application date is in future, debtors ledger shows invoice as unpaid even though it has been matched and paid. Hence we
