Additional Personal Detail Flexfield

I have a request to add an additional flexfield to hold yet another date field. They want this date field auto populated with the hire date. This date should not change, meaning if they become and ex-employee and return, the date should not be changed.

Without using a user hook, what would be the best method to add this logic?
