Is is possible to have nulls values within a char string? If there are nulls in the string, how can

We are using 10.2.0.4 on top of IBM AIX
Our application throw errors when accessing data from a not null char column. 
The application complains about nulls within the column.

 Is is possible to have nulls values within a char string?  If there are nulls in the string, how can I find and remove them?
