GATHER_STATS_JOB

 Hi regarding 'GATHER_STATS_JOB job i need some help.
the job is always being stopped
REASON="Stop job called because associated window was closed"
please advice what happens if i stop this job.
if this job is supposed to gather the statistics of objects which needs to be done so ,so why the count of stale tables/indexes are the same after this job has been done?
if it has been stopped it can not have effect on some of the objects .although it was working about 8 hours.
