How to fund a project at task level when project-level events exist

We have a project that has a project-level event.  The requirements for the project changed such that funding now must be allocated at the task level.  When trying to fund the tasks, we get an error saying task level funding is not allowed since project-level events exist.  Does anyone know of a way to delete the project-level event or have a workaround for this issue?
