Settings for remote softwares

 Hi During administering Oracle EBS R11/R12 remotely (With putty,VNCviewer ) what are additional settings are required? e.g whenever i start services I have to set DISPLAY. sometimes services starts successfully sometimes not (remotely).
Any settings need to be made while accessing remotely?
